Get the Right Power and Size 

Make sure you know what you are looking for. 

First, consider horsepower. 

Current boats have a coast guard tag stating the total weight, passenger capacity, and maximum horsepower. Your best bet is getting an engine as close as possible to the maximum horsepower, and not less than 2/3 of that horsepower. In other words, if the maximum horsepower a boat is rated for is 100, the smallest outboard you should pair with it is 66 hp. Anything less will leave you under-powered. 

Next, let’s think about shaft length. Shaft length always relates to transom height. Get this dimension by measuring from the top center of the transom (where the motor hangs) to the bottom center of the stern. This measurement will range between 15 and 25 inches. The shaft always has to be longer than the transom height. If you’re not sure, check with your owner’s manual or your boat dealer. An outboard with the wrong shaft length will perform poorly, so this is critical.

Make Sure It’s Compatible With Your Existing Setup

Always consider whether your prospective used engine is compatible with your existing setup. Are you using remote steering or tiller steering? Is there a control box already mounted on the boat from the previous motor? While these things can be changed, there’s always a cost, so make sure you understand the implications of making changes to your setup, financially and otherwise.
